Hi Families,
Wow, what a busy week! UPCOMING!!!
Reading: This week we learned about words that rhyme (words that have the same ending sound). We also practiced saying "more" when we read our old storybook favorites. When we have old storybook favorites, we are able to remember the words on each page. On some pages, we aren't able to remember all of the words that the author has written so we try and use picture clues to help us add more to the page. Students are working at becoming avid readers! Writing: This week we worked on writing all about our stuffed animals. We also worked with our partners to figure out how we can improve our writing. Students did a great job at giving suggestions. Math: We continued to work within 10. Students worked on configuring cubes into columns and rows. They worked on showing hidden partners of 10 (ex: 5 and 5). Students continued to practice using their number paths to 10. Lastly, we worked on acting out story problems using less than 10 without equations. Science: We learned about the life cycle of pumpkins (seed- spout- vine -flower- green pumpkin - orange pumpkin). We also cut open a pumpkin to see the inside. Students used their senses to observe the inside of the pumpkin. We love being scientists! Counselor Lesson: Ms. Bryant came in this week to talk with us about skin color. She taught us that we are all a shade of brown and talked about the different ways that we get our skin color (sun- melanin, our ancestors, and our family). Students were really engaged with this lesson. Other news:

Hi Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed some of the beautiful weather we've been having. Here are all of the things that we did this week. Reading: This week we focused on re-reading. We thought about how re-reading helps us rethink and connect with the story in ways that we had not when we read the first time. We also learned that re-reading helps us to not only learn from pictures but also from words especially, sight words! In addition, we also worked on sounding like teachers (or experts) when sharing a book that we have read before. Students practiced reading to others and they shared all that they knew from the story they had read. Writing: We worked on building our writing stamina (when we are done we have just begun). Our goal is to add to our pictures, words, or start a new piece of writing. Students are working on going back and adding more to their personal narrative stories. On Friday we talked about envisioning what we wanted to write and then wrote down/drew everything that we "envisioned". Lastly, we made heart maps. Students drew pictures of things that are important to them and can later help them if they ever can't figure out what to write. Math: This week we focused on writing numbers (1-5) and writing number sentences. We worked on showing numbers that we decomposed with materials and equations. In addition, we worked on sorting objects by count, finding different ways to decompose numbers (4 & 5), and adding one more. We also matched 6 objects to the number 6. I sent home a practice sheet if you would like to use it. Technology: We learned this week about being Good Digital Citizens and ways that we can stay safe while using technology. Students played a game on Kahoot to test their knowledge and had so much fun! If your student came home on Friday talking about not giving out personal information, not buying things online, holding tablets with two hands, or not talking to strangers it was because of this lesson. We will continue to grow in learning more about technology and coding this year! Other News: - Ms. Bryant: This week Ms. Bryant came in and taught students ways that they can make friends and get to know others better. She emphasized ways that you make a friend and ways that you don't make friends. -Donuts With Dads: It was so great to see all of you and to see the kids so excited to have you at school. Thank you so much for coming! - Letter Bags: Letter bags will start this week. Your student was sent home with the letter bag schedule for the year and a brown paper bag to start. Please help your student practice sharing their letter bag and coming up with clues. - Kindergarten Scarecrow Parade: It will be on October 31st at 9:30 am. You are more than welcome to take pictures and share in this memorable pat of Kindergarten! You are more than welcome to come and take pictures. Students can dress as a scarecrow or a farmer. - October 14th: Teacher Work Day: ***No students! Hi Families,

Hi Families,
What a wonderful First Week! This week we spent a lot of time getting to know each other, learning what it means and looks like to be a Kindergartner, as well as learning the rules and routines of our classroom and school. Here are some of the things that we worked on this week: Reading: We learned about "read to self" and what it looks like to read a book to yourself. Next week we will work on partner reading. Math: We started our first math module, our focus for these first few lessons were on classifying items and identifying if items are exactly the same or not exactly the same. Students are working hard and not giving up. We also are working on talking with one another about math. Phonics: We worked on writing and spelling our names this week. Other news: - Our counselor Ms. Bryant, came in this week to introduce herself and to talk with us about being mindful. - We worked a lot with Pete the Cat this week: he took us on a scavenger hunt on Friday and we made Pete the Cat shoes and headbands. -Snack: please make sure that your student still has two snacks a day, I have noticed that students are quite hungry and are eating most of their food, if not all of it by the time we have our second snack. Please also make sure that snacks are nut free as we have allergies in our classroom. If you would like to donate snacks to our classroom we would greatly appreciate it. ******CURRICULUM NIGHT: Tuesday, September 17th, 2019 at 6:00pm in room 402, we will head down to the MPR (lunchroom) after my presentation. Schedule: 6:00pm: K-2 classroom presentations 6:30pm: all school presentation 7:00pm: 3-5 classroom presentations I understand that this is a crazy time of year but, this is a really important event for you to attend. I will be going over the curriculum that we will be using this year as well as other important details that you don't want to miss! Since this is an adult only event, I understand if only one guardian is able to make it. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. |
